What can I do with this service?
You can encrypt any message text in a few seconds. After the encryption is done, your message will be unreadable for the human eye. Then you can send your message to a friend or save it to a file for later use. Your friend will only be able to read the message if he or she enter the secret password that you have chosen.
Our service can be used on any message and is suitable when the communication is done via an unsecured channel (like mail, IM, chat, etc) or when you want to hide information from robots or filters.
The encryption script is always runned locally in the browser on your computer. Therefor your secret password and message will never be sent over the Internet to our server. We believe your secret messages should remain secret, even for us!
Why should I trust you?
You should not trust any website, that is the idea behind our service. All encryptions are taken place locally in the browser on your computer. You are welcome to view the source code for our website to verify this. However, this will require some programming skills.
If you do not trust us you could always load our website, disconnect your computer from the Internet and then enter your secret password, message text and then press the encrypt button. The service will still work since no data needs to be transmitted over the Internet.
How secure is the encryption?
The encryption is secure enough for personal usage as long as you use a strong password. We use the cipher encryption algorithm AES with a 256-bit key length. AES is a very strong encryption chiper, trusted by governments and corporations all over the world. We have enhanced the way the key is chosen by using the well known key derivation function PBKDF2.
Even if we believe this service is safe to use we can and will not take any responsibility for messages encrypted with this service. All use is completely at your own risk.
We do not store any data about your message, password or even about the optional expiration time if you choose one. That beeing said, the option to set an expiration time for the message is not 100% secure and could in theory be bypassed by a skilled hacker (even if we have not found any feasible attack on this yet). However, to read the message the hacker would still need to figure out the complete password.
Please note that a weak password (like abc or hello) would not create a secure encryption of your message. You should always use a strong password of at least 8 characters in order to be somewhat safe.
Are there any limitations?
Currently you can not encrypt more than 256 kilobytes of data (that is about 100 printed pages of text). You should be able to encrypt any plain text message. All character sets are supported, including US, European, Cyrillic, Chinese and Japanese as long as the browser has support for UTF-8 encoding.
You are free to use SafeMess for any legal purpose. It is forbidden to use our service for any illegal activities. If you are under 18 years old, we recommend that you ask a parent before using SafeMess. Please note that we reserv the right to change the features or close this service at any time.
You are welcome to use a proxy server in order to view SafeMess if your government/employer/administrator have blocked our domain. Just make sure that the proxy let you use Javascript. You may also need to access the non-ssl version of our site at http://www.safemess.com/?nossl=1.
What kind of software do I need to use this service?
You can use SafeMess in any modern web browser with Javascript enabled. More than 98% of all Internet users will be able to use our service. We have successfully tested it in Internet Explorer 7+, Firefox 20+, Chrome 20+, Safari 4+ and Opera 11+. Older browsers may also work. You should also be able to use SafeMess on advanced phones and tablets, such as iPhone and Android devices. However, older Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones do not work.
Who are you? Can I contact you?
This service has been developed by Internetservice AB. You can email us at info@safemess.com. We appreciate any type of feedback, report of weaknesses or new design ideas.
How do I pick a good password?
A secure password should be at least 8 characters long and contain both small and LARGE caps and numbers. You can also add some special characters (like &,@£/#¤) to your password.
I like your service, how can I help?
You are very welcome to add a link to our website.
To show our button you can use the following HTML-code. You may upload the image file to your server if you want.

We would also like to get in touch with users that can help us translate SafeMess to Persian, Bengali, Japanese, Hindi, Korean or Thai. Unfortunately we would not be able to pay you for this help but we would add your name and website to our acknowledgements list below (if you want).
Acknowledgements and thank you notes
This service is mainly based on a couple of great open source and free Javascript implementations of well tested algorithms. We would like to especially thank the following people,
Chris Veness for the AES256 encryption code
Ma Bingyao for the XXTEA encryption code
Jeff Mott for the PBKDF2 code
Tyler Akins for the Base64 code
Scirè Salvatore, moderator at SWZone, for the Italian translation.
Jeremy Canale, CEO of AnoSearch.com, for the French translation.
Altay Tuna Kardas, for the Turkish translation.
Without your excellent work we would not have been able to create this service in such a timely manner.
We would also like to thank all people that have designed, enhanced and tested the core encryptions algorithms (AES, XXTEA, SHA-1, MD5, PBKDF2) used for this service.
Please note that the listed contributors do not endorse SafeMess in any way.
